FAQ About Tanzania Tours

What is the difference between a "Safari Lodge" and a "Tented Camp"?

Safari Lodges are permanent structures, often built with stone or timber, featuring hotel-like amenities (pools, large dining halls, and ensuite bathrooms). Tented Camps offer a more immersive “bush” experience. These are high-end, semi-permanent structures with sturdy canvas walls, real beds, private en-suite bathrooms, and electricity, offering a perfect blend of luxury and nature.

Yes, it is very safe. Tented camps are managed by professional staff who ensure that wildlife keeps a respectful distance. In many remote areas, camp staff will escort you between your tent and the main dining area at night for your safety.

No. Whether you choose a luxury lodge or a tented camp, all bedding, pillows, mosquito nets, and toiletries are provided. You only need to bring your personal clothing and gear.

It depends on your route. The Marangu Route offers “hut” accommodation, which are communal sleeping dorms. All other routes (Machame, Lemosho, Northern Circuit) use high-quality, weather-proof mountain tents, which are set up and dismantled daily by our porters.

On a Safari, yes. Almost all lodges and tented camps we recommend feature private, en-suite bathrooms with hot water and flushing toilets. On Kilimanjaro, bathrooms are communal, though we can provide a private “toilet tent” for your group for an additional fee to ensure comfort and privacy.

Most mid-range to luxury safari lodges have electricity and, increasingly, Wi-Fi in the main common areas. Please note that in remote wilderness areas, power may be solar-generated, and connectivity can be spotty. On Kilimanjaro, there is no electricity or Wi-Fi, so please come prepared with power banks.

Absolutely. All the lodges and camps we work with are accustomed to international travelers. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have specific allergies, just let us know at the time of booking, and we will ensure the kitchens are fully prepared.

What is the best time of year to visit for a safari?

Tanzania is a year-round destination. The dry season (June–October) is widely considered the best time for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water holes. If you want to see the Great Migration, late June to September is ideal for river crossings, while January to March is perfect for the calving season in the southern Serengeti.

Yes, Tanzania is generally very safe for tourists. National parks are well-managed, and our professional driver-guides are trained to navigate the terrain and wildlife safely. We recommend following standard travel precautions, such as keeping valuables secure and listening to your guide’s safety briefings.

Most international travelers require a visa. You can obtain one via the official Tanzania eVisa website before your trip, or purchase a “Visa on Arrival” at major airports like Kilimanjaro International (JRO) or Zanzibar (ZNZ). Check your specific country’s requirements 1–2 months before travel.

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory if you are arriving from a country with a risk of transmission. We also strongly recommend consulting your doctor regarding malaria prophylaxis and routine vaccinations (Tetanus, Hepatitis, etc.) at least 6–8 weeks before your departure.

Costs vary based on your preferred style of travel. Budget-conscious safaris (camping/shared vehicles) can start around $450/day, while mid-range and luxury fly-in safaris range from $600 to over $1,600+ per day. Your quote should always include park fees, 4×4 transport, and professional guide services.

Pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, beige) to blend into the environment and avoid attracting tsetse flies. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, and layers, as temperatures can drop significantly during early morning game drives or at higher altitudes.

Yes. Most lodges and tented camps provide charging points (usually Type G UK-style plugs). If you are camping or moving frequently, bringing a reliable power bank is a smart backup.

How long does it take to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?
The duration depends on the route you choose. Most Kilimanjaro climbs take between 6 to 9 days. Longer routes allow more time for acclimatization, which increases your chances of reaching the summit successfully.

No prior technical climbing experience is required. However, good physical fitness and mental preparation are essential since Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek, not a technical climb.

The best months to climb are January to March and June to October, when the weather is generally dry and visibility is clear.

No, Kilimanjaro is considered a “walk-up” mountain. You do not need technical climbing skills like using ropes, harnesses, or crampons. However, it is a high-altitude trek that is physically demanding, so a good level of cardiovascular fitness and endurance is essential for success.

Not at all. You don’t need previous mountaineering experience. However, you should prepare by hiking on inclines or using a stair-climber at the gym, focusing on building stamina. “Pole pole” (slowly, slowly) is the secret—successful climbers take their time to let their bodies adapt to the altitude.

Success rates vary significantly by the length of the route. Shorter routes (5–6 days) have lower success rates due to limited acclimatization time. We highly recommend choosing a 7, 8, or 9-day itinerary (like the Lemosho or Northern Circuit), which significantly increases your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak safely.

What kind of accommodation is provided during the climb?
The duration depends on the route you choose. Most Kilimanjaro climbs take between 6 to 9 days. Longer routes allow more time for acclimatization, which increases your chances of reaching the summit successfully.

No prior technical climbing experience is required. However, good physical fitness and mental preparation are essential since Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek, not a technical climb.

Yes, altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness level. Our guides are trained to monitor your health closely and ensure a safe and gradual ascent for better acclimatization.
Why should I book with Climbing Kilimanjaro Tanzania?

We are a locally owned and experienced tour operator with professional mountain guides, high-quality equipment, and personalized service to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and memorable climb.

Simply contact us via our website form, email, or WhatsApp with your preferred dates, the number of travelers, and your interest (Safari, Kilimanjaro, or Zanzibar). We will then schedule a consultation or send you a preliminary itinerary and quote to review.

For the best availability—especially during the peak seasons (June–October and December/January)—we recommend booking 6–12 months in advance. This ensures you get your first choice of accommodations, as the best lodges in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro fill up very quickly.

To secure your dates and lock in your accommodations, a 20% to 30% deposit is generally required. Once the deposit is received, we proceed to book all your permits, flights, and lodges. The final balance is typically due 30–60 days before your arrival date.

We accept international bank transfers (SWIFT/Wire Transfer). [Insert your specific payment options here, e.g., “We also accept credit card payments via our secure online portal”]. We will provide full banking details with your invoice.

We understand that plans can change. Cancellations made X days before the tour start date typically incur a fee. [Note: As an operator, ensure you define your specific terms here, e.g., 60+ days notice = full refund minus fees; 30-59 days = 50% refund; less than 30 days = no refund]. We highly recommend all travelers purchase comprehensive travel insurance.

No, our packages generally cover everything on the ground in Tanzania (accommodation, transport, guides, park fees, meals). However, we are happy to advise on the best flight routes and timing for your arrival at Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Zanzibar (ZNZ) airports.

Absolutely. All our itineraries are fully customizable. If you see a tour you like but want to add an extra day in the Serengeti or swap a lodge, just let us know. We specialize in building bespoke trips tailored to your preferences.
